GALLERY: Fun walk to raise funds for school
The fundraising event has been organised at the school for years.
Parents, learners and teachers gathered at the Irene Primary School grounds on Friday evening in a bid to raise funds for the century old school.
The fundraising event has been organised at the school for years, said organiser Rob Charlton.
He said funds raised would go to the school’s meal programme to benefit the learners whose parents were unable to provide.
“Part of what we are doing every year is to help our learners. Some of their parents don’t earn enough, so as a school we are trying to help them,” Charlton said.

Some of the funds are used to renovate and paint some of the buildings, fix broken windows and replace doors.
“The school is very old, 105 years, so the upkeep is something we have to do yearly,” he said.
Charlton said there were companies and NGOs that were helping.
“But we can’t solely rely on them and we appreciate their efforts but we also have to look for easy to raise funds for the school.”
He said the event was also meant to unite the Irene community.
“Many people, families, and friends attend the walk which provides them the opportunity to really talk and mingle,” he said.
Maggie Ngoma (51) whose grand-daughter is a grade 3 learner at the school said she felt happy about being able to send her grandchild to the school.

“Apart from all the other extra-curriculum activities they are doing here, the teaching is also on point.”
The school opened in September 1901, during the Anglo-Boer War (1899 – 1902) for children living in the Irene Concentration Camp.
