Thank you Rekord readers: Mamelodi schools benefit from sports equipment drive

Mamelodi schools received much needed sports equipment

Crawford College, in conjunction with Rekord newspaper, donated sports equipment to two Mamelodi schools on Monday.

The aim of the donation was to promote different sports in Mamelodi.

The two schools that received the generous donations were Lehlabile Secondary School and Ouane Primary School both in Mamelodi East.

Ian McLeod, a retired South African professional football referee and now headmaster of Crawford College, said they held an event in May in conjunction with Rekord newspaper to collect equipment.

McLeod said learners had different talents, but most of the schools did not have the necessary sports equipment.

He said the equipment drive was the first of its kind at the college and they were planning to host it annually as part of their community involvement project.

Head of commercial department at Capital Media Adri Brouwer said they were excited to be part of the sports equipment drive.

“Together with the staff members from Capital media we divided the sports equipment accordingly to both schools and a truck from Capital Media delivered the goods to the schools for the official handover.“

She said the schools were excited to receive equipment for cricket, basketball, soccer, hockey, volleyball and others.

Head of sports at Lehlabile Secondary School Nicolas Chauke said they were excited at the generous donation and were humble that their school was chosen.

“The school is very active when it comes to sports and this equipment will help the learners to identify their different talents,” said Chauke.

Joshua Chiloane sports co-ordinator at Ouane Primary School also said the learners were excited to receive the generous donations and they will make use of the sports equipment for many years to come.

“The generous donation came at the right time because the school has all the sports fields but the learners do not have the sports equipment to make use of the facilities at the school,” said Chiloane.

One of the learners at Ouane Tokelo Podile did not waste time and fitted out the sports equipment. He said he will pursue his dream of becoming a professional sports player.

The official handover of the sports equipment for both schools was held at Lehlabile school.
