DA demands answers over burglaries

Briefing the citizens is a matter of public importance to which ‘no’ is simply not an acceptable answer.”

The DA held a picket outside the National Prosecuting Authority headquarters in Pretoria on Tuesday morning demanding some answers.

Engaging in song and wielding placards, the DA called for Police Minister Fikile Mbalula and national director of public prosecutions, Shaun Abrahams, to update the country on the high profile criminal cases opened in the past 10 months, and the progress made in connection with the various burglaries at government institutions.

“The break-ins are worrying and point in a very specific direction. The DA has also laid in excess of 13 charges in the last 3 years, we want the police to investigate these matters and NPA to prosecute. South Africans should be worried because it is their tax money that is being wasted,” said DA spokesperson on justice and constitutional development, Glynnis Breytenbach.

Breytenbach said the 13 cases were against 23 individuals including President Jacob Zuma, members of his cabinet, members of the Gupta family and six companies and state entities.

She said the charges included corruption, contempt of court, perjury, money laundering, treason and racketeering.

The DA believes Zuma and the Gupta family were involved in criminal activity.

The party called on Mbalula to brief the public on what the SAPS were doing to prevent break-ins into government institutions.

“Corruption fighting institutions are vital in any functional democracy. In South Africa, where the stories of high-level corruption increase daily, our institutions need protection.

“Briefing the citizens is a matter of public importance to which ‘no’ is simply not an acceptable answer,” said Breytenbach.

Party spokesperson on police Zakhele Mbhele said the DA commended the undertaking by parliamentary police committee chairperson Francois Beukman, to summon the acting head of the hawks to give a full briefing and report back on the burglary.

He said the party also wanted Mbalula summoned to the same committee meeting to inform parliament of his intended action against the break-ins.
