East security guard opens community library

1500 books were donated to Rekord security guard John Kawazi.

Security guard at Rekord offices, John Kawazi, finally made his dream of a community library a reality with the help of the Pretoria residents.

In June when he took a bus ride home to the town of Chegutu, in Zimbabwe, he took along 100 of the 1 500 books donated so far.

“I took about 100 books with me. About 70 percent of the donated books were Christian books, and the others educational and trivial books.”

He will take the next consignment on his next trip home.

“I have read about six of these books myself and each one taught me something new.”

The city council of Chegutu gave him a room with shelves to start his library. “On the opening day the CEO of the council and a social worker came to congratulate me,” Kawazi said.

He still needs more children’s books though.

“The library uplifts the community. It changes people’s lives as you learn new things when you read. I would like to thank the community who donated the books. Please keep on donating any books.”

He said on his last visit to his home town he discovered his next project. “There is a farm in my home town where children play in and near the river. There is no creche where they can play.”

He is now looking for a big tent and toys so that he could help the children. “I counted there are about 70 to 80 children on that farm.”

Readers who wish to donate any books to this cause may drop them off at Rekord’s office.
