Walking to help animals

Owners and their dogs enjoyed a relaxing morning walk through the forests of Irene at the SPCA's Wag-a-Walk event on Saturday morning.

Wagging tails and playful barks greeted everyone on Saturday morning at the Tshwane SPCA’s Wag-a-Walk in Irene.

Pet lovers enjoyed a relaxing 1,4km or 5km walk with their canine companions through the beautiful forest at the Jan Smuts House in Irene.

“This was a wonderful opportunity for pets as well as their owners to socialise with other people and animals,” said Adrie Pienaar from the SPCA. “With events like these we want to encourage owners to exercise their dogs more often.”

The dogs were happy after their walk and took to the water bowls and snacks provided for them. Some of them decided the water bowls could function as splash pools as well.

The community once again showed strong support towards this cause and the funds raised will be used to keep the dogs at the SPCA healthy and happy.

“It was wonderful to see the amount of people caring for animals,” Pienaar added.

This event was also held to create awareness for the neglected dogs at the SPCA, as pet owners were encouraged to adopt a dog rather than buy one. The next dog walk will be on 16 March at the Hedianga Farm in Pretoria East. For more information, contact the Tshwane SPCA on 012-664-5644.
