Sean sustained third and second degree burn wounds on 17 October last year when he tried to help a woman get her broken down car running again.

It was said he had used petrol to remove oil that had spilled on to his hands and arms then used his shirt to dry himself.

This shirt caught alight when someone lit a cigarette.

The teenager, who started school again on Monday, said it was time for things to go back to normal again after a struggle that seemed never-ending.

His mother, Mé-Lissa Smith, said Sean’s friends welcomed him to school with open arms, which made it easier for him to feel comfortable.

“Despite other challenges, we are very grateful to residents from all over the world who helped us during our time of need,” she said.
