TUT graduates host art exhibition

A Fine Art B-Tech exhibition was hosted at a pop-up gallery in Freedom Park.

The annual Fine Art B-Tech exhibition was hosted by the Tshwane University of Technology on Saturday.

The event allowed the university’s fine art B-Tech class of 2016 to exhibit their work at Freedom Park.

Freedom Park chief operating officer Jane Mufamadi said the exhibition allowed other young artists to see it was acceptable to pursue a career in the arts, rather than studying something more conventional.

“You have chosen a course most people look down on but because you followed your dreams, here you are exhibiting your gifts and talents to the world,” Mufamadi told exhibitors.

Curator Caitlin Greenberg said the exhibition displayed a diverse collection of art that focused on both social and personal issues.

The result was an exciting exhibition of young and upcoming artists in South Africa, she said.

“The show consists of a dual exhibition of the work done by the amazing students,” said Greenberg.

Another group of students will have an opportunity to exhibit their work on 10 February this year.

Ithali Khoza’s striking painting of a woman walking with rats on leashes was inspired by his own war with rats.

“We had a problem with rats taking over our township [Tembisa] but we [community] have fallen in love with these rats,” said Khoza.
