Beauty queen puts Mamelodi in spotlight

Profile of Sharon-Rose, Miss SA 2016 finalist who was born in Mamelodi and is a UP graduate.

Entering any beauty pageant can require one to have much confidence and importantly love for people.

Sharon-Rose Khumalo is fortunate enough to have both and a great personality to boot.

She was born Sharon-Rose Khumalo Lehlohonolo on 1 January 1991 in Mamelodi east.

Her middle name Lehlohonolo means blessed, and she’s blessed with many talents.

She is a painter and passionate about gardening.

Sharon-Rose loves helping school children especially those in the FET phase (grade 11 to 12).

She tutors pupils from different schools in Mamelodi who come to the University of Pretoria every day without fail.

“I am more inspired by them as they give me a reason to take my time and help them,” she said.

She is part of Mamelodi Initiative, a not-for-profit organistion focused on improving the lives of residents of Mamelodi, especially children and the youth.

Sharon-Rose is also co-director of Team Matric.

She was raised in a very conservative Christian family where she had to follow strict rules.

“When I was growing up I thought it was unreasonable but now as an adult I see the need to enforce those rules and way of life.”

She loves her family very much.

“I have a younger brother who is eight years old, he is my all,” she said.

Record asked Sharon-Rose about her journey to Miss SA and she said it was not as easy as it seemed.

“I first entered Miss SA in 2014 but didn’t make it past the auditions. I then entered again in 2015 and that’s when I made it to the finalist stage entitling me to run for Miss SA this year,” she said.

She said after losing out on Miss SA in 2014, she went back to school.

“I graduated with a BSc in Biotechnology and I fell in love with education and the opportunities it affords one (hence the tutoring),” she said.

Sharon-Rose explains how she became a part of Team Matric.

“Team Matric found me after a former schoolmate, who co-founded the programme, invited me to volunteer as a tutor. Ever since then, I fell in love with all the pupils and what we do, so that (experience) inspired me to take my passion (teaching) to a bigger platform such as Miss SA. Not only to give back to my hometown but my country too,” said Sharon-Rose proudly.

Sharon-Rose always had a thing for beauty pageants but her parents wanted her to be educated.

“I’ve always loved modelling but my parents wanted me to get a degree first. So we made a deal that I can only start modelling professionally after I complete my studies. Hence I only signed with an agent in 2015.”

Ella Khumalo, Sharon-Rose’s mother said her daughter was a hard worker and a creative person who liked expanding her gift.

“Sharon-Rose is a very respectful child (I still call her a child as she is my baby). She respects everyone she meets regardless of race, age or gender. I guess we have taught her well (she laughs).”

Record asked Ella what she thought of her daughter suddenly being in the limelight and she said: “Sharon-Rose is a grounded person who will not lose herself in the limelight but will rather use that shine to impact the lives of young people. We are supporting her as a family.”

Ella said when her daughter won the coveted tittle, she wished she would continue to work with children and get a doctorate.

“I don’t want her to just be a beauty queen, I want her to be something great and for her to follow her dreams. She wants become a business woman, she should go for it.
