Extraordinary collection of David Goldblatt photography at Aspire Art

Available till September 13, Aspire Art invites art enthusiasts to view the photographic collection available for sale in its upcoming auction.

Discover a remarkable selection of photography by world-renowned South African artist  David Goldblatt, up for auction on September 13 at Aspire Art.

Goldblatt is celebrated for his deep and contemplative portrayal of South Africa’s intricate socio-political terrain. Over his impressive seven-decade career, his camera bore witness to historical moments, delving deep into the heart of the apartheid era and its aftermath.

His photographs challenge the boundaries of conventional documentary photography. They stand as historical archives and poignant narratives, providing genuine and perceptive explorations of the nation’s social, political, and cultural environments, as well as its people and places, and the intricate connections among them.

On September 13, Aspire Art’s 20th Century & Contemporary Art sale will showcase  nine David Goldblatt photographs from his series, ‘In Boksburg’, ‘The Structure of Things Then’, and ‘Intersections Intersected’. This collection also includes a never-before-seen portrait of a young Goldblatt, captured in 1979 by fellow photographer Paul Alberts, who published the first edition of Goldblatt’s ‘In Boksburg’ in 1982.

Goldblatt has long been regarded as the moral compass of his homeland, describing himself as “an unlicensed, self-appointed observer and critic of South African society, which I… explore with the camera.” He established the Market Photo Workshop in 1989 after a remarkable and highly acclaimed journey from modest beginnings.

Among his notable accolades are the Camera Austria Award in 1995, the Hasselblad Foundation International Award in Photography in 2006, the Henri Cartier-Bresson Award in 2009, the Lucie Lifetime Achievement Award in 2010, and the Infinity Lifetime Achievement Award from the ICP, New York, in 2013.

David Goldblatt’s emotionally charged photographs bear testament to the potency of visual storytelling and the profound influence of photography as an expressive medium.

“Aspire Art remains committed to fostering a passion for photography as an art form.  We firmly believe that South African photographers produce some of the most rigorous and captivating lens-based art in existence. Our enduring focus on the exceptional quality and incredible value inherent in South Africa’s photographic heritage is unmistakable.”
