Central woman arrested for assaulting ex-boyfriend, damaging his vehicle

The 22-year-old woman was arrested later that same day and charged with malicious damage to property and assault, both charges falling under the Domestic Violence Act.

A woman (22) is in police custody after allegedly viciously attacking her ex-boyfriend early on Monday, October 24.

According to the Sunnyside police, the woman showed up at the ex-boyfriend’s flat uninvited, loudly banging on his door, demanding to speak to him.

After ignoring her for as long as he could, the ex-boyfriend reluctantly opened the door to inform his irate former partner that he had no intention of talking to her about anything, in hopes of de-escalating the rising tensions.

Instead of the altercation coming to an end, the woman further intensified the situation by heading downstairs, now with a knife in hand, to take out her frustrations on her ex-boyfriend’s vehicle.

“She reportedly slashed the tyres and broke the windscreen of his car,” Sunnyside police communication officer, Captain Daniel Mavimbela said.

Afterwards the woman returned upstairs to the ex-boyfriend. Still armed with the knife, she grabbed his by his private parts while threatening him.

The 22-year-old was arrested later and charged with malicious damage to property and assault, both charges falling under the Domestic Violence Act.

Even though the young woman was now arrested, her rampage still continued during her detainment at Sunnyside police station.

“She allegedly caused mayhem while in detention at Sunnyside police station by disrupting the police while they were conducting cell duties to ensure the safety of detainees, which resulted in a charge of interfering with police duties being added to her case docket,” Mavimbela continued.

The woman is expected to appear before the Pretoria magistrate before the end of the week to answer to her charges.

The police hope that this arrest sends a stern warning to all perpetrators of domestic violence, that their actions will not be tolerated regardless of their gender.

“It has to be noted that domestic violence will not be tolerated irrespective of whether the perpetrator is a man or woman. The victim, in this case, has to be commended for not fighting fire with fire, but instead, contact the police for assistance,” Mavimbela concluded.
