Metro visits Leratong Hospice to commemorate World Food Day

Leratong Hospice is situated in Atteridgeville ext. 16 and is a care centre that houses 18 patients from areas around Pretoria West, providing them with support-palliative care.

The metro recently donated food parcels to the Leratong Hospice care centre in Atteridgeville in honour of World Food Day on October 16.

The initiative was headed by the Social Development and Community Services department and attended by MMC Peggy de Bruin and MMC for Environment and Agriculture Management, Katlego Mathebe, among others.

Leratong Hospice is situated in Atteridgeville ext. 16 and is a care centre that houses 18 patients from areas around Pretoria West, providing them with support-palliative care.

De Bruin states the initiative creates awareness of the global hunger issues affecting the world as well as educates others on the need to eat healthily.

“During the visit, we distributed food parcels from Tshwane Food Bank. The event was further used to create awareness of the importance of food security,” said De Bruin.

The department also planted fruit trees and vegetables at the care centre, in the hopes that this initiative will inspire the hospice centre and its residents to lead healthier lives.

“The City of Tshwane will always encourage residents to find innovative ways to make life easy by making use of what is at their disposal, which in this case is land, seeds and water to create food to feed their families daily,” De Bruin continued.

In addition to the food day commemoration efforts at Leratong Hospice, the metro has also announced that its Food Bank Programme has been allocated R4.8-million to provide relief to qualifying struggling families and non-governmental organisations.

The Gauteng Department of Social Development has predicted that South Africa’s population would reach 82 million by 2035, and with that, the demand for food will increase drastically.

The metro thus believes initiatives such as these go a long way in preserving food security for generations to come.
