Mamelodi author launches support group for writers

The movement also serves as a platform where authors would share their experiences.

Local authors were encouraged to unite and support each other during a celebration of Heritage month at Denlyn mall, where a Mamelodi author also launched a movement on September 23.

The movement was initiated by Lucas Machipa, a librarian whose passion is promoting, empowering and supporting local authors.

He said the movement also serves as a platform where authors would share their information and experiences.

“Sharing of information and support among authors would be a pillar for the success of the movement, and encourage authors to unite in support of each other,” said Machipa.

The event was in collaboration with local visual artists who displayed their work during the launch filled with performances and speeches by different individuals.

Poet TLC Wa Africa opened the event while Solo and other performers entertained the audience with music, poems and dance.

Author Kedibone Mailula shared tidbits of her journey on self-publishing.

She narrated how she published her first books, the challenges she faced and how she overcame them.

Mailula further encouraged the audience especially the aspiring authors to do research before tapping into the publishing space.

Young author and motivational speaker Howard Zondo, who published his first book at age 15, narrated his journey and highlighted the opportunities open to him as an author.

Aubrey Mogase, a guest speaker for the day, called on authors to write more local stories.

He said he believed that every man has a story and such story needed to be written.

“If it is not written, it might not be known but if it is written, it would pass from generation to generation,” he said.

Raw Page Studio told guests that they can assist authors and aspiring authors to brand and promote their work.

The event concluded with cultural dance in celebration of Heritage Day.

Machipa invited any author who wished to add their name to the Mamelodi local author database to send their details to mamelodiauthors@gmail.com or join the Mamelodi local author Facebook page.
