Car pulled out of Hennops River

The Wierdabrug CPF recovered a vehicle from the Hennops River on Sunday afternoon.

The Wierdabrug CPF recovered a vehicle from the Hennops River on Sunday afternoon.

According to the CPF the car was swept off the low-water bridge in Witstinkhout Road during a flood in February.

Centurion is known for its flood risks – and the many low-lying bridges crossing the Hennops present problems every year.

Fortunately the driver was rescued by SAPS divers before his car washed down the river.

Andrew Doyle of the Wierdaburg CPF said three or four cars were swept away while crossing low-water bridges during the rainy season.

“Now that the water has lowered we could see one of the wheels sticking out of the ground and we decided to pull it out with some help from the community,” said Doyle.

He thanked everyone who was involved in retrieving the car.

Doyle encouraged more residents of Wierdabrug to join the CPF.

CPFs are community patrols aimed at preventing and reducing crime usually in conjunction with both the police and private security companies.

“The CPF is the only community organisation recognised by the SAPS and has been working closely with the SAPS, Tshwane metro police and security companies in the area.

“Patrollers can be called upon at any time and organised patrols are done on an ad-hoc basis.

“CPF are the eyes and ears for the SAPS and are very reactive and responsive to community calls,” said Wierdabrug CPF chair John Wright.

CPFs promote coordination between the SAPS and members of the community.

“Police and members of the community should establish and maintain a partnership with the community to the benefit of all residents.

“In this way they can promote cooperation and communication between the police and the community as well as ensure that the police fulfil the needs of the community in respect of policing.

“In the long run this will also improve the service of the police to the community, improve transparency and accountability of the SAPS and promote joint problem identification and problem solving.”

Residents who wish to join their local CPF, can contact their closest police station for contact information.
