Centurion sinkholes made a priority

Repair work on the Kruger Road sinkhole will commence in the third quarter.

Centurion residents will be pleased to know that some progress has been made in fixing and filling two of the area’s most problematic sinkholes.

The sinkhole on Kruger Avenue in Lyttelton, which developed earlier this year, caused major traffic problems in the area.

Residents and SAPS officers opened an alternative route through a driving school to relieve congestion.

“While the surface extent of the sinkhole on the roadway may be small, the sinkhole expands at approximately 2m below the surface.

“It also extends into the northbound lane, and to the existing sinkhole located on the verge of the southbound lane,” metro spokesperson, Selby Bokaba told Rekord at the time the sinkhole first developed.

Ward councillor David Farquharson by the sinkhole on Potgieter Road.

The road was closed to prevent further development of the sinkhole.

On August 5, the metro informed the Rekord that the geological investigations and repair reports on the sinkhole have been completed.

“The next sinkhole in line for repairs is the Alexander Road in line with the priority listing to which the appointment process has commenced and it is
envisaged that the process will be done by end of September 2022.

“Subsequently, repair work will commence in the third quarter of the current financial year.”

Metro workers have steadily been filling the hole.

Meanwhile, residents who have to use Kruger Road can drive around and use Ergon Road and then into River Road to make their way around the sinkhole.

Local businessman and resident Erno Janse van Rensburg struck a deal with the metro and the driving school to allow commuters to drive through their premises as an alternative route.

“This is a very busy road and this sinkhole is huge.

“There are many businesses in the area and they are sadly losing a lot of revenue due to the hole.

“Hopefully, with this route open, we are saving people a lot of time,” he said.

Much progress has been made on the sinkhole on the corner of Potgieter Road and Clifton Avenue.

The sinkhole was discovered in March 10.

Metro workers have been hard at work with repairs on this sinkhole and they have been making steady progress since.

The sinkhole developed three years ago and repairs started in April this year.

This sinkhole is a priority due to its proximity to the Unitas Hospital and ambulances have to make use of the road to get their patients to the hospital.

It also lies opposite the Centurion Hospice and has been the cause of much traffic congestion as the road has been cordoned off.

Centurion is plagued with sinkholes.

According to the metro, there are 47 sinkholes in the Centurion area.

During the budget speech in May, the metro approved R29.5-million to fix sinkholes in the area.
