Suspected robbers arrested in hijacked vehicle in Pretoria east

Recently, there has been a spike in armed street robberies by suspects in a silver VW Polo in the east of Pretoria.

Two men suspected of being behind a spike in street robberies in the east of Pretoria have been arrested.

“They were arrested driving a hijacked vehicle in Silverton on Monday afternoon,” said police spokesperson Warrant Officer Isaac Mculu.

He said the arrest followed a call from a concerned resident who suspected people in a silver VW Polo were behind the recent armed robberies in the area.

“The police managed to spot the vehicle and upon searching it, found an unlicensed firearm and ammunition,” Mculu said.

Mculu said the police also did a background check of the vehicle and found that it had been hijacked in Cullinan on May 24.

The police have also managed to link the vehicle with a fake registration number plate to a recent armed robbery in Equestria.

“One armed robbery victim in Equestria, Furrow Road, managed to take the registration number of the vehicle when he was robbed and it matches that of the arrested suspects’ vehicle,” Mculu said.

Mculu said the police would profile the suspects and that could result in them being linked to more crimes.

“Three other armed robberies around the Silverton area reported to the station recently were by suspects driving a silver VW Polo; however, in those cases, the victims did not see the registration number,” he said.

Mculu said the police would have an identification parade for the victims of the recent robberies to indicate if these suspects are their robbers.

“In all the cases, the victims were robbed of their cellphones and cash,” he said.

The suspects will appear in the Pretoria magistrate’s court this week on charges of possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition as well as a hijacked vehicle.

“We would like to urge the public to report crimes at their local police stations,” he said.

Recently, the Hawks arrested a suspect in a stolen vehicle on the N14 highway from Pretoria to Johannesburg.
