CPF issue emergency and safety procedure

“We are confident our community members might reap great benefit from the information.”

The Hercules CPF has taken a safety first approach as the persistent rains continue to batter the area.

With some areas in the province and country experiencing flooding, the CPF wants to share some emergency and safety procedures.

Although no major incidents have been reported in the area so far, the CPF feel having this knowledge on hand will be helpful going forward.

In some cases there have been flooding over low lying bridges in the area but roads have been closed and detours provided, CPF spokesperson Jan Prinsloo said.

“Luckily we have not had serious effect from this Cyclone Eloise but we are confident our community members might reap great benefit from the information,” Prinsloo said.

“This message is not to cause panic, we are rather making sure that we are ready when nothing is happening, instead of being in a situation where we are heading for a disaster and nothing is ready and in place.”

In the event that a resident finds themselves in a potentially threatening situation due to the weather follow these tips:

– Contact CPF sector coordinators or HCPF management.
– Make sure all batteries are charged for flashlights or extra batteries are ready.
– Make sure all radios are charged and extra batteries are also charged.
– If you are using a radio mast, disconnect it and use a vehicle antenna for communication. Lightning can knock out antennas and damage radio.
– Ensure generators are full of fuel and that you have extra fuel.
– Make sure water tanks are full.
– Rather park vehicles under canopies or in a garage to protect against hail damage. Refrain from parking under trees.
– Elderly and care centres – make sure you have all emergency numbers on hand.
– In an emergency, if possible try to call as messaging takes too long.
– Stay in touch with your neighbour and form a team in need.
