Mayor launches festive road safety operations

Williams engaged with motorists and passengers during the operation held on the N1 highway.

The local festive season road safety operation was launched on Thursday by Tshwane metro police department.

The operation led by Tshwane mayor Randall Williams, was launched on the N1 near Carousel Plaza north of Pretoria.

The mayor urged motorists to be cautious on the roads this festive season.

“Road traffic and pedestrian safety is an issue of national importance and concern,” Williams said.

“The ugly truth is that during last year’s festive season 1 617 people were killed on South African roads.”

Williams said while this was a decrease of 10% nationally, the fatalities in Gauteng increased from 219 to 254.

He said the main causes of fatal crashes over this period across the country last year were pedestrians, single vehicle overturning, hit and run and head-on collisions.

“The majority of road users, who died on the roads, were pedestrians, who accounted for 40% of all fatalities, followed by passengers at 34% and drivers at 25%.

“The reality is that 86% of all incidents were attributable to human error, and incidents of hit and run increased by 17%, speeding by 14% and reckless overtaking by 10%.”

Williams also commended the Tshwane metro’s zero tolerance approach during the past festive operations.

“I trust that the TMPD’s zero-tolerance approach and pro-active policing will again bear fruit during this year’s operations.”
