Cops tackle GBV with awareness campaign

This was done as the commencement of the 16 days of activism against women and children abuse drew closer.

Police officers in Akasia, north of Pretoria, took to the streets to launch an awareness campaign aimed at curbing gender-based violence at the Wonderpark shopping centre at the weekend.

Spokesperson Constable Lindiwe Mdluli said this was done in collaboration with the local CPF as the commencement of the 16 days of activism against women and children abuse drew closer.

“Pamphlets and other informative brochures were distributed to shoppers at shopping centres,” she said.

Acting station commander Lieutenant Colonel Dinah Tabane said: “Events of this nature continue to remind us of the huge responsibility we, as the police and the community, have in the safety of women and children.”

The awareness campaign they embarked on followed a day after the ANC Women’s League (ANCWL) embarked on a prayer intervention session at Theo Martinspoort on the R80 on Saturday.

Scores of women, who arrived in their black and green regalia, said they stood against the killings of women and children while also asking to have a fruitful working relationship with the local police and CPF.

The mountain range along the Theo Martinspoort was where the body of Martha Mhangi was found in September with a gunshot to her head after she and her husband were attacked by a group of men when they stopped by the side of the road.
