MEC intervenes to end taxi violence in Atteridgeville

"Taxi violence is wasting our time; we should be focusing on developing Phomolong."

Roads and Transport MEC Jacob Mamabolo visited Atteridgeville on Tuesday in an attempt to defuse violence at the Phomolong taxi rank.

This comes after a number of shooting incidents were reported in the area over the past month.

In the latest incident, a 40-year-old taxi operator was reportedly shot and wounded by unknown suspects while sitting in his vehicle.

Mamabolo said that the violence was an internal matter that needed to be resolved.

“Part of the reason I’m here is to convey a message to the taxi bosses that there are people dying inside your association and I’m not blaming anyone. Only the police will know who is responsible for the killings.”

Mamabolo vowed to stop the violence.

“You must tell those murderers and killers that the violence is going to end. I want everyone in this association to be alive and only die of natural causes and not as a result of taxi violence,” he said.

“This week, we are going to resolve the matter, even in Centurion.”

He urged all law enforcement agencies to become involved.

“Every life matters. Taxi violence is wasting our time; we should be focusing on developing Phomolong,” he said.

In recent years, several people have died in and around Pretoria in what has been described by police as taxi violence.
