SA now has 3 034 cases of Covid-19, death toll rises to 52

A total of 251 more positive cases have been confirmed since Friday. Gauteng still the province with the most recorded cases.

The number of Covid-19 positive cases in South Africa has risen to 3034, the health minister Dr Zweli Mkhize announced on Saturday evening.

According to Mkhize two more fatalities have been recorded since Friday, bringing the death toll to 52.

The two deceased people were from the Western Cape and KwaZulu-Natal.

According to Mkhize, Gauteng remains the epicentre of the outbreak with the total number of cases in the province now totalling 1101. The Western Cape currently have 836 cases, followed by KwaZulu-Natal with 604 cases.

The Eastern Cape have 270 cases, Free State is on 100, Limpopo is on 26 cases, North West is on 24 cases, Mpumalanga now have 25 cases, followed by 16 cases in the Northern Cape.

The remainder of the 32 cases is unallocated.

The total number of recoveries are now on 903.

Meanwhile, the Department of Correctional Services announced earlier on Saturday that five more officials have tested positive for COVID-19, bringing the total number of cases in correctional services to 99.

The five new cases of officials are as follows: one at Limpopo Regional Office, two in East London and two in Worcester.

The total breakdown of confirmed cases at Correctional Services is as follows:

Eastern Cape

Officials – 31

Inmates – 56 (remains the same as previously reported)

Western Cape

Officials – 9

Inmates – 0

Limpopo

Officials – 2

Inmates – 0

Head Office

Officials – 1

“Screening of officials and those accessing Correctional Services premises remains in force to prevent the further spread of COVID-19 in our centres across the country. We will continue working towards the wellbeing of officials and inmates, as their health is our priority,” the department said in a statement.

Globally more than 2 million cases of Covid-19 have been reported to date.
