Second chance for 2019 matrics postponed due to Covid-19

The 2019 rewrite examinations will now be merged with the November 2020 examinations with more details to follow.

Matrics who did not meet the pass requirements in 2019, as well as those who were looking to improve their marks, will have to wait a bit longer.

This announcement comes after the basic education department postponed the May/June amended senior certificate (old matric) and the national senior certificate exams.

About 350 000 matric candidates have been affected by the decision, according to the department.

“The exams were scheduled to start on Monday 4 May, and conclude on Friday 26 June,” said basic education director-general Mathanzima Mweli.

“The Covid-19 virus has led to the early closure of schools during the first term.

“The national lockdown had since been extended until Thursday 30 April. This has resulted in a disruption to schooling and hence the rewrite May/June 2020 examinations had to be re-scheduled.”

Mweli said the examination would be merged with the November 2020 examinations. More details would follow in “due course”.

“Candidates will be informed regarding registration, examination centers and time-tables.

“The department urges all candidates to continue their preparations. Learning and revision material has been made available on the department’s website.”

The Second Chance matric support programme link on the website was still available to help especially those who had been studying independently as part-time candidates.
