Gauteng taxi violence probe resumes

Last year, a wave of taxi violence broke out in certain parts of Gauteng most noticeably Olievenhoutbosch and Centurion.

The commission of inquiry into last year’s taxi violence is set to commence on Monday.

The commission will hear testimony from the Gauteng Department of Roads and Transport’s Acting Chief Director Modise Sojane from Monday until Wednesday.

Sojane’s testimony will include how the minibus taxi industry is structured, governed, managed and regulated and again how the law regulating the taxi industry has evolved over time

Last year, a wave of taxi violence broke out in certain parts of Gauteng, most noticeably Olievenhoutbosch and Centurion where more than 10 people were killed.

During the first commission last year, Gauteng roads and transport MEC Jacob Mamabolo urged the taxi industry to support the commission in its work.

“We are confident the commission will open a new chapter for the taxi industry and place it on a completely new path for modernisation,” he said.
