WEATHER: Scorching heat wave to hit Pretoria

“We have a special weather advisory out for persistently high temperatures.”

The SA Weather Service has warned residents to expect extremely hot temperatures on Saturday.

Service Forecaster Kumsa Masizana said “We have a special weather advisory out for persistently high temperatures that may result in a heat wave.”

Masizana said the heat wave was expected to start in Pretoria on Saturday and end on Monday.

She said on Friday a minimum of 20°C and a maximum of 33 °C are forecast.

However, “On Saturday when the heatwave starts, we are looking at maximums of 36° and minimum of 20°C.

Masizana said Sunday and Monday the temperature would hit a scorching 38°.

She said from Thursday evening there was a 3 percent of chance rain and on Friday, 30 percent.

The service has cautioned residents to stay indoors in a cool room near a fan if possible.

“The old and infirm must take extra care to stay hydrated and cool.”

It said residents should avoid strenuous outdoor activity, playing excessive sport and hard labour.

“Dress in light weight clothes, drink plenty of water, not alcohol,” it stressed.

Lastly it urged pet keepers and livestock owners to ensure the animals had enough water.
