Mokoka back to challenge at FNB Durban 10K CitySurfRun

After his 5th place at the Athletics World Champs in Doha, Stephen Mokoka is one of the favourites to win the prestigious FNB Durban 10K CitySurfRun this coming weekend.

SA 10km record holder (27:38) and SA Half Marathon record holder, Stephen Mokoka from Gauteng North is ready to challenge at the 2019 FNB Durban 10K CitySurfRun on Sunday.

Some experts believe Mokoka is in the best shape of his life. In July this year Mokoka ran his 5th best ever half marathon time (60:57) to win the national title. A month later he became only the second South African to break 60 minutes when he ran 59:50 in Buenos Aires. His time will become the new SA Record as the times of 59:20 and 59:40 of Hendrick Ramaala were run on an aided course.

“The 10K CitySurfRun always brings fast athletes to South Africa and is one of the reasons why I like racing in Durban,” said Mokoka, who just returned from the World Championships in Doha.

Mokoka clearly relishes competing against top international competition. The CitySurfRun in Durban falls right in with his objectives of racing against top competition – only now it is on home soil.

“It makes a difference when you run at home. You get this extra feeling of pride to be racing amongst the best in the world here in South Africa,” he said.

Mokoka is acutely aware of how the level of running has improved since the FNB Run Your City Series started with its first event in May 2015 with the FNB Cape Town 12 Onerun.

“The guys are hungrier. They know that we are well looked after and that if they have a good run here, they could get an invitation to race overseas. So, this has all helped with raising the standard of running in South Africa,” he explained.

The course in Durban is ideal for fast times and is the perfect opportunity for South Africa’s leading athletes to improve on their bests. Add to that mix a deep international field and you have the makings of yet another impressive race.
