March against poor train services to hit Pretoria

“The mass action will have a major impact on Prasa’s Metrorail commuter service thus affecting train operations countrywide.”

A national march against poor train service will hit Pretoria east and various areas of South Africa on Friday.

The march is organized by the Federation of Unions of South Africa (Fedusa) and members of the United National Transport Union (Untu).

Fedusa spokesperson Frank Nxumalo said “the protest was against extremely poor and dangerous passenger trains”.

“They continue to violate all health and safety provisions resulting in endless fatal accidents that have left many families traumatised,” he said.

Nxumalo said Fedusa wanted President Cyril Ramaphosa to declare the passenger rail crisis a national disaster and deploy the army to stabilise the situation while crafting a new strategy.

Prasa in a statement said the mass action will have a major impact on their Metrorail commuter service, thus affecting train operations countrywide.

Prasa said due to the protest action, it was planning to run a reduced service according to a weekend time table.

“This will depend on the demand and availability of safety critical staff to operate the service,” it said.
