NEWSFLASH: Police arrest one after west CIT robbery

VIDEO: The arrest was made within hours of the cash-in-transit robbery in Lotus Gardens on Tuesday evening.

Police have arrested one person and recovered various stolen items within mere hours of a cash-in-transit (CIT) robbery at Lotus Gardens Pretoria this week.

The CIT vehicle was robbed by a group using explosives at around 17:00 on Tuesday.

The robbers forced the CIT vehicle to stop after firing shots at it, according to police spokesperson Brigadier Vishnu Naidoo.

The guards were subsequently disarmed and the suspects used explosives to blow the vehicle open.

They fled taking an undisclosed amount of money as well as the pistols belonging to the guards.

“Following the robbery a joint task team was established to investigate the robbery,” said Naidoo.

The team included members of crime intelligence, the Hawks as well as provincial and national intervention teams.

The team traced the robbers to a house in Kgokong Street, Atteridgeville.

“There they recovered two vehicles used by the robbers,” said Naidoo.

“The team also recovered a 9mm pistol which belonged to one of the CIT guards, ammunition as well as tens of thousands of rands.”

National police commissioner General Khehla John Sitole said the task team was “hot on the heels of the [rest of the] robbers”.

“[They] will not rest until [all suspects] are found and brought to book”, said Sitole.
