New emergency number for Tshwane

“The new emergency number is easy for older people and kids to remember.”

Tshwane metro has launched a new 107 emergency number.

Phoning the number will put residents in contact with Tshwane’s emergency response teams.

“The new number is easy for older people and kids to remember,” said acting mayoral spokesperson Norman Mohale.

It can be dialled using either a landline or cellphone and calls were free of charge.

This new emergency number could be reached at any time, he said.

The number can be used for any life-threatening emergency such as calling for an ambulance, firefighting and disaster assistance or rescue.

Mayor Stevens Mokgalapa also launched 72 new emergency vehicles on Monday in the Pretoria CBD.

“The new fleet vehicles will help in fire and rescue incidents, chemical and dangerous goods spillage and major incidents that require mobile incident command.”

Mokgalapa said the vehicles were part of the city’s programme to replace its emergency service fleet.

Tshwane emergency services departmental spokesperson Charles Mabaso said the city also introduced the new fleet of emergency service vehicles on a full maintenance lease.

“These vehicles have state-of-the-art equipment,” he said.

“They will be operating throughout Tshwane to ensure emergency assistance is available at the scene of incidents promptly and efficiently in the shortest time possible.”

The fleet includes 18 rapid intervention vehicles, four bush fire pumpers, 14 engine pumpers, a hazardous materials unit, a mobile command unit and 34 ambulances.

Mabaso said some of the vehicles were equipped for all-terrain usage.

“The safety of our residents cannot take a backseat when it comes to budgeting,” Mokgalapa promised during his recent state of the capital address.

The metro has since also put aside R44.5 million for a fire station in Mamelodi.
