UPDATE: New Tshwane mayoral candidate to tackle GladAfrica, smart meter contracts

“I will ensure senior managers … are held accountable.”

The DA’s new candidate for Tshwane mayor has vowed to tackle the GladAfrica and PEU smart meter contracts.

Stevens Mokgalapa addressed the media at a briefing at the DA’s Nkululeko House in Bruma, Johannesburg on Sunday afternoon.

The briefing was held to announce Mokgalapa as the next mayoral candidate.

“I will carry on with the hard work of rebuilding the metro and delivering on our manifesto commitments,” he said.

“My priority will be to carry on the DA’s positive vision to create an environment that allows job creation, deliver better services and eliminate corruption.”

Mokgalapa promised to focus mainly on stabilising the metro’s administration in order to deliver better services to all Tshwane residents.

“Much has been done in this regard, but much more is needed to reverse the rot we inherited in 2016.”

He further promised to address the ongoing issues surrounding metro contracts.

“I will also ensure that senior managers who are legislatively responsible for the running of the city and the functioning of supply chain are held accountable.”

Mokgalapa holds a degree in political science and an honours degree in international relations from the University of Pretoria.

He previously served as DA Minister of Human Settlements and is currently the DA Shadow Minister of International Relations and Cooperation.
