East police take anti-crime message to schools

“We spoke to the pupils about the dangers of dangerous weapons, drugs, bullying and gangsterism."

Mamelodi West police took their crime awareness drive to Moretele Primary School on Monday.

Officers spoke to the learners about bullying at school, respecting their teachers, drugs and gangsterism.

The police were accompanied by members of the Moses Mabhida foundation.

Police spokesperson Captain Johannes Maheso said this was part of the Mamelodi West police annual January back-to-school campaign.

He said all schools in Mamelodi West would be visited to make sure that everything was in order.

“We spoke to the pupils about the dangers of dangerous weapons, drugs, bullying and gangsterism,” said Maheso.

The police were joined by the sector police managers, police social crime division and the police communications.

Maheso said during the visit Moretele Primary School learners responded very well and asked many questions about crime.

The police also advised the learners to always walk in groups of more than five and to avoid walking home alone especially in isolated areas.

Learners were also highlighted about the dangers of what they bought at school, especially sweets because drugs came in many forms.

The learners were also told to always respect their teachers and not to be afraid of the police.

“The police are here to protect them from any harm,” said Maheso.

The police advised the learners to report any suspicious-looking persons to the police, teachers or social workers.
