SPORT: Sundowns pay tribute to Phil Masinga

The former Sundowns player died of a cancer-related disease at a Johannesburg hospital.

Mamelodi Sundowns have paid tribute to former Bafana Bafana striker Phil Masinga who died on Sunday.

According to the South African Football Association (SAFA), the former Sundowns player died of a cancer-related disease at the Johannesburg hospital.

Mamelodi Sundowns expressed their deepest condolences on the passing on of Phil Masinga.

“I visited Phil Masinga in hospital when we became aware of his illness and had a meeting with his wife and family and informed them that the President of Mamelodi Sundowns Dr Patrice Motsepe had undertaken to pay the R100 000 and the medical fees that were required for Phil Masinga’s treatment,” said Downs marketing and communication director Alex Shakoane.

“We were hopeful that the treatment would help even though we were informed that his condition was serious. We are grateful to Phil Masinga for the years he spent at Mamelodi Sundowns and will support and work together with his family,” he said.

Shakoane said Phil Masinga will always be part of the Mamelodi Sundowns family.

Phil Masinga joined Mamelodi Sundowns from Jomo Cosmos and subsequently left Mamelodi Sundowns to play in the English Premier League for Leeds United then in the Italian Serie A.

Leeds United also posted their tribute on their Twitter page.

“It is with great sadness that the club has learnt of former striker Phil Masinga’s passing. The thoughts of everyone at the club are with his family and friends.”

He will be remembered for his goal against Congo in 1997 which ultimately took Bafana Bafana to their first World Cup in France.
