UPDATE: #DrosRape accused to undergo evaluation next year

Nicolas Ninow is said to have a history of substance abuse and bipolar disorder.

Nicolas Ninow will be admitted to Weskoppies for psychiatric observation next.

A Pretoria magistrate ordered that the 20-year-old accused of raping a seven-year-old girl at a Dros restaurant in Silverton submit to observation during Ninow’s court appearance on Wednesday.

He is charged with rape, intimidation and possession of drugs.

Magistrate Ignitius Du Preez said Ninow would have to wait until 15 January as there was no bed available for him at the institution.

Du Preez said in the event that a bed became available sooner, interested groups such as lobby groups and the media would be informed.

Defence lawyer, Riaan Du Plessis had earlier said a psychiatrist had previously concluded that his client was suicidal.

Then prosecutor Sanette Jacobson requested he be sent to Weskoppies, the state psychiatric institution.
Nicolas Ninow is accused of “snatching” the girl into the men’s toilet and forcing himself on her in September.

He was yet to apply for bail.

Outside the court, members of various organisations sang and chanted in support of the victim’s family.

The organisations were ANCYL, #NotInMyName while the DA called for justice.

The matter was remanded to 15 January 2019.

*Though the law prohibits identifying someone accused of a sexual offence before this individual has pleaded to the charge, Caxton made an editorial decision to name Ninow following the circumstances around his previous appearance on 2 October.
