Cabinet gearing up for 16 Days of Activism against gender-based violence

The annual 16 Days of Activism is held from 25 November until 10 December.

This year’s 16 Days of Activism for No Violence Against Women and Children will be launched on Sunday.

Cabinet ministers will undertake events throughout the country through community-engagement initiatives.

The annual 16 Days of Activism is held from 25 November until 10 December.

The campaign is part of a global programme advocating against violence against women and children.

According to statistics released by the South African Police Service two months ago, there were more than 20 000 murders during the 2017/18 period and 20% of these were women and children.

The stats show that 3 915 women and children were murdered in the last financial year.

Cabinet said in a statement on Thursday that the department of women is coordinating and consolidating the government’s calendar of events for the 16 Days of Activism campaign.

“Members of the national executive as well as provincial and local government leaders will undertake portfolio/sector-specific events throughout the country through community-engagement initiatives,” Cabinet said.

Cabinet has urged South Africans to use the platform and participate in a government event nearest to them.

“Civil society and other women’s organisations are encouraged to populate their calendars of events for the period. All South Africans are urged to work together to heed the call to #HearMeToo, by listening to the plight of women and taking action to end the scourge of all forms of violence against women,” it said.

This year there have been several campaigns to raise awareness about gender-based violence, including the #100MenMarch in July, the #TotalShutdown women’s march in August and the recent gender-based violence and femicide summit.
