UPDATE: Plea of Dros rape accused ‘not surprising’

“We don't buy the story.”

It is not surprising that the Dros rape accused claims to be having mental problems, said one of the organisations picketing at his appearance in the Pretoria Magistrate’s Court on Thursday.

“In fact we had warned previously that this would be the case,” said Siyabulela Jentile, president of NotInMyName

“We don’t buy the story.”

Nicholas Ninow (20) made his third court appearance on Thursday, when he was referred for psychiatric evaluation.

Ninow is accused of having raped a seven-year-old girl in a Dros restaurant in Silverton, east of Pretoria, in September. The alleged crime is said to have been committed in the men’s toilets.

Jentile said his organisation was hoping that Ninow would be jailed if found guilty.

It actually wanted attempted murder to be added to the charges.

“Rape is a most dehumanising crime and when you rape someone, you end a life. A part of the victim dies.”

Ninow will be back in court on 28 November.

He has not been asked to plead to the charges yet.

*  Though the law prohibits identifying someone accused of a sexual offence before this individual has pleaded to the charge, Caxton made an editorial decision to name Ninow following the circumstances around his previous appearance on 2 October.
