UPDATE: VIDEOS: Hot reception for #DrosRape accused

Members of several political parties, including the EFF, DA and the ANC took part in the protest.

Calls of “straight to jail” and “down with rapists” sounded outside the Pretoria Magistrates Court on Thursday as a man accused of raping a seven-year-old girl in a Pretoria Dros made his third appearance.

Picketers danced and sang outside the court in Francis Baard Street which was closed to traffic.

Posters called for the protection of women and children.

Several political parties, including the EFF, DA and the ANC  took part in the protest, along with members of the organisation #NotInMyName.

Nicolas Ninow was arrested in September after he allegedly raped the girl in the men’s toilets of the Silverton Dros restaurant.

Siyabulela Jentile, President of #NotinMyName, addressed the crowd at court.

“We are not going to allow someone to do this to a little girl and then they claim that there is something wrong with them in their head,” he said.

*  Though the law prohibits identifying someone accused of a sexual offence before this individual has pleaded to the charge, Caxton made an editorial decision to name Ninow following the circumstances around his previous appearance on 2 October.
