‘Maepa desperate to be Tshwane mayor’ – Solly Msimanga

“The allegations made against me are extremely emotional and are nothing but wild conjecture unsupported by fact.”

Mayor Solly Msimanga said Tshwane ANC regional chairperson Kgosi Maepa is desperate to be mayor this week.

Msimanga made the remarks as he filed an answering affidavit at Pretoria central police station on Tuesday.

The affidavit was filed in response to a court application lodged by Maepa.

Maepa’s application challenged a ruling by council speaker Katlego Mathebe that disallowed the use of a secret ballot during a recent no-confidence vote against the mayor.

The ANC believes that Mathebe’s ruling led to the failure of the no-confidence motion.

Msimanga said Maepa’s application was without any basis and a desperate attempt to use the courts to force the processes happening in council.

“Maepa’s court application demonstrates the desperation with which he wants to be the mayor despite a motion sponsored by him failing in council,” said Msimanga.

Msimanga said, when reading the ANC’s court documents, it was unclear who the actual applicants in their matters were.

“The allegations made against me by Maepa are extremely emotional and are nothing but wild conjecture unsupported by fact,” said Msimanga.

Msimanga said they were still to determine whether Maepa had received any due authority from the Tshwane REC, Gauteng PEC or the ANC’s NEC for their application.

Msimanga said the metro equally contended Maepa’s urgent application.

“If the ANC wishes to bring a motion against me, they are more than welcome to do so in the time prescribed by the rules of council because,” said Msimanga.

“The fact is that there are no grounds for urgency in this regard.”

Last month’s motion of no confidence against Msimanga last month at Sammy Marks council chambers was the second such motion he had survived this year.

In an open ballot, 77 councillors voted for the motion and 95 against it.

The EFF, however, abstained from voting.

Msimanga said the metro’s lawyers were confident that Maepa’s case would not succeed in court.
