UPDATE: R100 000 raised for #DrosRape victim

The group said in the event that they were unable to reach the family, donors would be informed and refunded accordingly.

More than R100 000 has been raised for the seven-year-old girl who was allegedly raped at a Dros restaurant in Silverton about a month ago.

It was alleged the girl fell prey to a 20-year-old man who forced her into the men’s toilets at the restaurant and raped her.

A campaign was launched on 3 October by a group of anonymous concerned citizens to help pay for the girl’s therapy.

Last week, the campaign had managed to raise more than R40 000 from 55 donors, with one donor giving as much as R30 000.

The group have urged members of the public to lend a helping hand.

All funds raised with this initiative will be “strictly managed” by Backabuddy, an online South African fundraising platform.

“Funds will only be released to the family directly, or to relevant practitioners identified by the family,” the group said. “The anonymous campaign creators will have no access to the funds.”

Twenty-year-old Nicolas Ninow made an appearance at the Pretoria Magistrate’s Court on 2 October in connection with the rape.

Ninow chose not to apply for bail.

The case was remanded to 2 November.
