UPDATE: Funds raised for 7-year-old #DrosRape victim

One donor contributed close to R30 000.

A fundraising campaign has been created to help raise funds for the therapy of a seven-year-old girl who was allegedly raped at a Dros restaurant in Silverton.

The girl was allegedly “snatched” by a man into the restaurant’s toilets and was later found bleeding from the groin almost three weeks ago.

The campaign was created by a group of concerned citizens who would prefer to remain anonymous.

“We do not need any recognition or importance out of it, what is important is that we come together as concerned South Africans and help this young victim, whose life has been all but destroyed.”

The group said they were saddened and disturbed by the events and felt the need to lend a helping hand in the hopes that the funds would be used to rebuild the girl’s life.

They said the campaign went live on 3 October and has so far raised more than R40 000 from 55 donors.

“Therapy is very costly these days and we know that for many people, it is not possible to pay for it.

“Rape could traumatise the victim emotionally for years afterwards, so we hope the funds raised will be used for therapy and rehabilitation for the victim, so that she can have some semblance of normality or even happiness again.”

A week after the incident, Dros committed to paying the medical bills and counselling of the girl and affected family members.

The group said the family could use the funds in any way they saw fit.

“We trust the family will know best what to do to help their daughter under the circumstances, and we will certainly not dictate how the money should be spent.”

One donor contributed close to R30 000.

They said all funds raised were managed by Backabuddy NPC and would only be released to the family directly or to relevant practitioners identified by the family.

“In the event that we are unable to reach the family, donors will be informed and refunded accordingly,” they said.

Twenty-year-old Nicolas Ninow made an appearance at the Pretoria Magistrate’s Court on 2 October in connection with the rape.

Ninow chose not to apply for bail.

On the day of the incident, he was allegedly found naked with the little girl in the men’s toilet.

The girl is said to also have been naked.

The case was remanded to 2 November.
