East police put squeeze on crime

A suspect was arrested for drug possession.

The Mamelodi West police and their crime-fighting partners raided Mamelodi hostels and other crime hotspots on Monday morning for drugs.

Police spokesperson Captain Johannes Maheso said Operation Zero Tolerance, which started on Monday, was intelligence-driven targeting identified crime hotspots.

He said one suspect was arrested for possession of drugs while several people were stopped and searched.

He said locals had long alleged that hostels in the area and Zitha Street in Mamelodi West were high crime locations.

“Such operations are going to be conducted on a regular basis until such time that our communities are free from fear of crimes,” said Maheso.

Maheso said the suspect would appear in court within 48 hours on charges of possession of drugs.

He advised the public to report any suspicious person to the police on 08600-10-111.
