UPDATE: Tshwane probes metro manager – Msimanga

"If a case is to be made against anyone, it must be rock solid," said Msimanga.

Tshwane mayor Solly Msimanga has hit back at the opposition’s claims that the metro has done nothing about a contract allegedly unlawfully entered into by city manager Dr Moeketsi Mosola.

“I put on record that we are diligently investigating this matter and have been doing so for some time now,” Msimanga said.

His response came after the ANC Gauteng alleged that the DA-led coalition government had done nothing to intervene in the contract or protect the officials who were allegedly stripped of their authority when they questioned the irregularity of the contract between the metro and GoldAfrica.

ANC Gauteng spokesperson Tasneem Motara alleged that several city departmental heads who challenged the irregularity ran into trouble with Mosola.

“Unsurprisingly, they had their delegated authority unreasonably withdrawn.”

Msimanga hit out at the ANC over claims of corruption in Tshwane metro, saying it was hypocritical.

“I am nevertheless mystified by the ANC’s hypocritical call to investigate corruption when it is the DA-led multiparty government who has taken several contracts concluded by the previous administration on judicial review.”

Earlier in the week, Msimanga was said to have questioned Mosola about how the tender was procured, its specifications and the management of financial and operational risks to the metro.

“I have since received responses from the city manager and I, in consultation with the relevant officials, am currently studying the explanations given by the city manager, and will decide on an urgent basis whether this is to be referred to the municipal council for disciplinary investigation and action,” he said on Tuesday.

Msimanga added that the investigation was serious and no “short-cuts” would be taken.

“If a case is to be made against anyone, it must be rock solid,” he said.
