Tuks vice-chancellor takes international post

"Professor de la Rey is an exceptional candidate to lead the University."

University of Pretoria vice-chancellor professor Cheryl de la Rey is expected to vacate her position for the same position at the University of Canterbury, at the end of the year.

“It is with sadness that the university takes note of the De la Rey’s decision to step down in favour of a new role,” spokesperson Rikus Delport said.

De la Rey was appointed to the position nine years ago.

“Under her capable leadership, the university has enhanced its academic stature, improved its international ranking, made significant strides in transforming its staff and student demographics, expanded and renewed its physical infrastructure and is in a sound financial position,” Delport said.

He added that the university wished De la Rey well for the future.

A statement issued by the international institution earlier this week revealed De la Rey would assume her role mid-February next year.

“De la Rey is an exceptional candidate to lead the university. She has a significant international profile and a strong research reputation in her chosen field of psychology and leadership and governance,” University of Canterbury chancellor Dr John Wood said in a joint statement with De la Rey.

De la Rey said: “I’m honoured to be selected for this position and thank the University of Canterbury council for its vote of confidence. I look forward to using my skills and experience and build on the good work of my predecessor.”

De la Rey’s successor is expected to be appointed in due course.
