Donation to help Baviaanspoort prisoners

"The training centre is limited by a lack of running computers."

A Pretoria east prison has received a donation that is expected to help with the rehabilitation of inmates.

Baviaanspoort prison, east of Pretoria, received 10 refurbished desktop computers from IT company Xperien to assist inmates with their IT training.

The prison’s vibrant training centre offers inmates qualifications in business and engineering studies but was limited by the lack of working computers, said Xperien MD Alvin Peacock.

Trainer, Francina Manthata said the donation would enable offenders to strive for a better future.

“It is our wish to forge an ongoing partnership between the department of correctional services and Xperien with a focus on educational and training programmes in information and communication technology,” she said.

Peacock said the company was proud to be part of the campaign to educate prisoners.

“This donation forms part of our quest to help curb electronic waste by lengthening the lifecycle of electronic equipment through refurbishment,” he said.

Peacock said by purchasing refurbished computers, the company contributed to the reduction of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere to promote a greener planet and a better future for the coming generations.

“After 14 years of innovation and development, Xperien has refined its refurbishment processes which are ISO certified and audited,” he said.

Peacock said refurbished products offered high-quality products at a low cost.

“However, there are a number of things to keep in mind when you buy refurbished products. Ensure refurbishment is certified and was done by a trusted and accredited company that offers warranties and return policies,” he said.
