INFOGRAPHIC: Elderly woman scammed in the east

Brooklyn spokesperson, Captain Colette Weilbach has in the past urged residents to be vigilant especially now with the festive season looming.

An elderly woman was robbed of thousands of rand at a shopping centre in the east last Thursday.

Verna Wagner (81) said she was using the ATM when a man using a machine close to her intervened.

He told her the one she was using was not working properly.

“He advised me to use the ATM he was using. When I entered my pin, the machine said the withdrawal could not be completed,” said Wagner.

She said the man in black attire grabbed her hand before making a run with her bank card.

“I did not see that he took my card, I only realised this when I saw him walking away quickly.”
