Teenagers’ 2-hour elevator ordeal at Menlyn

If found in a similar situation, customers are advised to stay calm and press the call button.

Two teenage girls were trapped in an elevator at the Menlyn mall on Wednesday, after a technical fault.

The girls were trapped for nearly two hours on level seven before someone at the mall heard their screams for help.

In a statement the center management said paramedics were called to the scene to check if the girls had suffered any injuries.

“We have been in touch with both families involved to update them and offer trauma counselling,”the centre management said.

Customers were advised to stay calm and press the call button should they find themselves in a similar situation.

“If there is no response, try to get the attention of people outside the elevator,” the centre said.

The mall’s center management said it was investigating the cause of the fault.

“Center management takes the safety and security of our customers seriously and as such have launched a full investigation into the incident.”
