Christmas wish list for Thandanani Drop-In Centre

Christmas wish list for a non-profit organisation from Mamelodi East.

Thandanani Drop-in Centre in Mamelodi East is a non-profit organisation that fights against poverty, unemployment and the drug and substance abuse ravaging the Mamelodi community.

The organisation was formed by two cousins who grew up together, namely Thabo Kgotsi (34) and Victor Tswayi (31).

The centre was called Mamelodi East Feeding Scheme in the 1980s but was unfortunately stopped somewhere in the late 1990s.

When they formed the organisation in 2011, the two cousins said they could not watch as the centre that helped them a lot when they were growing up simply close down.

Both came from poor backgrounds and the centre used to feed them after school. The centre also had educational games that kept them busy and – most importantly – away from negative things such as drugs.

“We reopened the centre in 2011 to help keep the youth and children of Mamelodi away from drugs and crime,” said Kgotsi.

The centre operates from Monday to Saturday.

Though they have achieved most of their goals, the centre still has a Christmas wish list that can help it to function full-time.

The centre desperately needs kitchen equipment such as refrigerators, gas stoves, gas cylinders, pop machines, microwaves and chairs.

For their daily after-care school programmes they also need educational games and sports equipment such as soccer balls, basketball balls, colouring books, crayons and the like.

Kgotsi said the equipment does not have to be brand new. Anything will help.

These generous donations will help the centre to run for many years to come and produce future leaders of this country.

Anyone who wishes to help may contact Thabo Kgotsi at 078 157 2417.
