Former Downs and Bafana player launches book

Teko Modise will go down in history as the best SA midfielder of the last decade.

Former Bafana Bafana and Sundowns player Teko Modise launched his first book on Tuesday.

The 35-year-old has arguably been the best SA midfielder of the past decade having made his name in 2006 in the colours of Supersport United.

He became a household name locally and on the continent in the colours of Orlando Pirates where he was named PSL footballer of the year in 2008 and 2009.

“On Tuesday night, The Curse Of Teko Modise was launched at Exclusive Books, Rosebank Mall and the event was attended and supported by soccer legends and coaches including Doctor Khumalo, Brian Baloyi, Mark Williams, Jomo Sono and Shakes Mashaba,” said spokesperson Lilitha Vabasa.

“The Curse Of Teko Modise, published by Jacana Media, is a story of a boy, a nation and fans of the beautiful game going for their dreams.

“The book also gives readers an insight into the shy midfielder’s personal life, which is sometimes stranger than fiction.”

Vabasa said Modise’s class and character would be memorable.

“Teko Modise slowly changed from being just another talented young footballer to becoming an iconic and colossal brand and he did it all with guts and determination and by standing on his own two feet. They just don’t make footballers like Teko anymore.”

Modise’s career flourished further when he made his move to Mamelodi Sundowns in 2011 having won his first major trophy with Pirates in 2010.

During his days with the Pretoria club, Modise won the league title twice, the Nedbank cup and the Telkom knockout.

His career highlights include winning last year’s CAF champions league, representing Bafana on more than 50 occasions and playing in the Fifa world cup on home soil.

The Curse Of Teko Modise, penned by Nikolaos Kirkinis, retails for R206.
