East community joins hands to fight drugs, crime

Let us fight nyaope together and save our community.

A number of organisations in Mamelodi have come together to fight the drug and crime scourges affecting the community.

The local CPF in partnership with the police, Gauteng department of community safety and Mamelodi local drug committee came together last Sunday at an imbizo, community meeting, to discuss ways to enhance the ongoing battle against nyaope drug and find ways to overcome the ever-escalating crime.

Recent crime statistics announced by Police Minister Fikile Mbalula showed Mamelodi and Nellmapius were among the areas most affected by violent crime in the East of the city.

Mamelodi East CPF chairperson Eddie Mnguni said the main aim of the community gathering was to make sure Mamelodi became a crime-free zone.

“We can only achieve this if the community works together with us to keep the area free of crime and drugs,” said Mnguni.

“Residents must report any crime or suspicious people to the police, that way we will become a crime-free society. This is the beginning of our outreach programme.

“We feel it is important for us to engage with the community to root out all the problems. And we believe by communicating with the community we will all know what to do.”

Awareness meetings have already taken place in Stoffelpark, Alaska, Nellmapius extension 24, Phomolong and extension 11. There are plans to visit other areas of Mamelodi soon.

Alpheus Sealetsa of Mamelodi local drug committee also urged parents to work together with authorities to help their children who are hooked on drugs.

“Let us fight nyaope together and save our community from this evil drug that is destroying our young people,” he said.
