East assault video leaked by ‘disgruntled’ former employee

VIDEO: A former employee wanted Brinant to pay him R140 000.

A video of an alleged ‘assault’ involving a Brinant Security official is being circulated on YouTube, Facebook and Twitter.

Although the incident took place five months ago, it is only doing the rounds now because Brinant claimed they refused to be the victims of blackmail by a former employee who was dismissed by the company.

HR manager Maryna Kleynhans said the former employee wanted Brinant to pay him R140 000 – or he would leak the video.

“He has a grudge against us and is trying to bring the company into disrepute. The guard in the video is not the one who leaked the video and he also did not open an assault case,” Kleynhans said.

In the video, a manager is seen slapping a security guard employee across the face.

Kleynhans said it wasn’t an assault and the manager only did it in self-defence because the guard tried to grab a handgun from him.

The ‘assaulted’ guard is accused of being involved in a string of robberies that took place in one night at an estate in the east of Pretoria.

It is alleged the accused guard switched off a security camera on the night of the robbery so that there was no evidence.

Three premises in the estate was robbed and security cameras were only switched back on after the robbery.

He was arrested for complicity in theft.

Kleynhans said the manager can be seen pointing at the screen, showing the guard that he is the culprit who switched off the camera.

The guard was apparently unaware of a camera inside the guard house that is used to check whether guards are sleeping.

“We are there to protect people and it is so bad for us if one of our own guards are involved in a crime,” she said.

Kleynhans said although the guard was in the wrong, the manager was not supposed to have done it.

“This is not how we do business at all, but the manager was so angry that our brand name was damaged by the guard. He is on suspension and we are investigating the matter to see what really happened and to make a decision,” she said.

There is also an investigation against the former employee who leaked the video for copyright infringement.
