UPDATE: LISTEN: Cigarette assault advocate out on bail

The advocate is expected in court on Monday when the investigation should be completed.

A Pretoria advocate accused of assaulting a 29-year-old woman over a cigarette lighter is out on R2 000 bail.

Sunnyside police spokesperson Captain Daniel Mavimbela told Rekord that no preferential treatment was given to the accused.

“The suspect exercised his legal right to apply for bail through his legal representative before his first court appearance. An impression should not be created that such this a preferential or unique.

“Many other accused persons do exercise that right dependent on the alleged offence they committed,” said Mavimbela.

He said the detective on the case had requested more time to complete the investigation. The advocate will be summoned to appear in court as soon as the investigation was done, expected to be Monday.

“The suspect is expected to face a charge of assault with intent to do grievous bodily harm,” said Mavimbela.

The advocate was accused of allegedly striking a woman with a bottle, then kicking her after she had fallen to the ground in a flat in Sunnyside

According to police reports, the assault followed an altercation after the woman had asked for a cigarette lighter from the accused.

Mavimbela said the police had called an ambulance for the woman after she arrived at the police station with visible injuries to the head.

He added that although the suspect was unknown to the victim, the police were able to establish his identity.
