East beset by car theft, hijackings

Mamelodi motorists advised to upgrade their vehicle security.

Mamelodi motorists have been warned to upgrade their vehicle security, especially those who do not have lock-up garages to park their cars in.

This comes after several cases of car theft have been reported in the far east of Mamelodi.

Police spokesperson Captain Michael Mbewe said most of the car thefts happened at night and urged motorists to upgrade their security.

Mbewe said: “We have received several complaints where the victims wake up in the morning only to find that their vehicles are gone.

“If you don’t have a garage, park your vehicle where there is light and install a car security system and lock the gates at night.”

Police also expressed concerned at the growing number of hijackings. Mbewe said areas around Mahube Valley, Extensions 5, 6, 11, SnS and 16th Section in Mamelodi East have been identified as hot spots for hijackings.

Following recent hijacking incidents, police warned motorists to avoid parking their cars in those areas for long periods.

“We are aware of tactics used by criminals and had allocated resources to Mahube Valley where most of the hijackings had been reported.”

Mbewe urged motorists to be wary at all times.

He advised the public to report any suspicious looking people to the police by calling 08600 10111.
