LISTEN: SA Corruption buster gets clean audit

The SIU exceeded eight of its ten targets and intervened in cases that could have resulted in losses to the state amounting to R4 billion.

The Special Investigating Unit (SIU) received an unqualified audit for the 2016/2017 financial year from the auditor-general.

In a statement, SIU spokesperson Nazreen Pandor said on Thursday the unit had exceeded eight of its ten targets and intervened in cases that could have resulted in losses to the government amounting to R4 billion.

“Working closely with state institutions, the SIU also referred cases worth R3.8 billion for action. These significant achievements evidence the SIU’s commitment to fighting corruption, malpractice and maladministration,” said Pandor.

She said in the 2016/2017 financial year, the unit submitted six reports to the presidency and retrieved R43,5 million for the government, the unit also identified an additional R126 million which the government needs to retrieve that had fallen into wrong hands.

“In strengthening the fight against corruption, the unit referred 108 cases to the NPA and the Assets Forfeiture Unit (AFU) for forfeiture orders and 137 for disciplinary, executive and/or administrative action,” she said.

SIU head advocate Andy Mothibi thanked the staff and other parties who contributed to the unit’s achievement.

“These great achievements would not have been possible without the staff, ministry and department of justice, the presidency and other key stakeholders,” said Mothibi.

Pandor said the unit would next financial year review its organisational structure to better position itself for the fight against corruption, malpractice and maladministration.

“To ensure that the SIU becomes the state’s preferred service provider in forensic investigations, the executive is in the process of amending the special investigating unit and special tribunals acts. Aligned to the amendment, is the revision of the funding model, as well as the re-establishment of the special tribunal, further ensuring speedier access to justice,” Pandor said.
